Selected UK Internet Statistics 2009

We have pulled some choice stats that we thought you would find interesting stats from the E-Consultancy Internet Statistics Compendium 2009, looking at who is doing what online.

UK Internet usage

Penetration

There were around 39.1 million (64.2% penetration) Internet users in the UK in 2008, this is estimated to grow to 42.3 million (69.2% penetration) in 2009.[Source: eMarketer, October 2007]

Time spent online

The UK has the most active online population in Europe, with the highest average number of daily visitors (21.8m), the highest usage days per month (21 per user), and the highest average time spent per month per user (34.4 hours). [Source: comScore via Econsultancy blog, June 2007]

Broadband

The proportion of UK homes taking broadband services grew to 58% by Q1 2008, a rise of six percentage points on a year earlier. 

Mobile broadband emerged in 2008 as an increasingly popular means of accessing the internet.  There were over 500k new connections in the five months from Feb 2008, with 133,000 connections in June 2008.[Source: Ofcom, Aug 2008]

Who is accessing the Internet?

Over 55's

The average age of UK internet users is on the rise, thanks to the growing online presence of the over-55's, or 'silver surfer'. [Source: Nielsen, December 2007] 

While the under-25s' share of the UK internet population has fallen from 29% to 25%, silver surfers' share has increased from 16% to 19%. [Source: Nielsen, December 2007]

The number of adults using online banking between 2001 and 2006 grew by 174%, with a 350% increase in the over 55 age group [Source: APACS, Aug 2007]

35-44 age group

The largest demographic group online is currently the 35-44 age group, which accounted for 23.5% of internet visits in the four weeks up to 12th May 2007. [Source: Hitwise via Econsultancy blog, May 2007]

18-34 age group

In the UK the internet is used almost equally by men and woman except in the 18-34 age group where women spend more time online than men (57% compared with 43%). [Source: Ofcom, December 2007]

Women aged 18-34 account for 21% of all time spent on computers in the UK, which equates to 13 minutes out of every hour online. [Source: Nielsen//NetRatings via Econsultancy blog, May 2007]

18-34 year olds are the biggest computer users, spending around 60 hours per month on their computer, while under 18s spend 16 hous. [Source: Nielsen//Netrating via Econsultancy blog, May 2007]

What are the UK going online for?

Search

Google, Microsoft and Yahoo were the top 3 sites by Number of UK Unique Visitors in 2007 and 2008 [Source: comScore, Nov 2008]

Shopping

UK Shoppers will spend £13.16bn online in the last quarter of 2008, 15% more than Q4 2007. [Source: IMRG/Capgemini via Econsultancy blog, Nov 2008]

This equates to £215 for every person in the UK, but represents a slowdown compared with the 54% year-on-year increase in 2007.

55% of UK adults have purchased something online [Source: ONS via eMarketer, Oct 2008]

Online retail sales in the UK are predicted to reach £44.9bn in 2012, up from £19.5bn in 2008. [Source: Verdict Research via eMarketer, Sept 2008]

Radio

8.1 million people in the UK listen to the radio via the internet, either live or through a 'listen again' service. [Source: Rajar, Jan 2008]

TV

In January 2007, nearly half of all broadband user in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK watched TV online. [Source: Motorola via emarketer, May 2008]

The European market for IPTV services will more that double this year, with much of this growth coming from the UK.  The UK is prdicted to have the highest growth rate in 2007, with subscriber numbers growing from 80,000 to 300,000 by the end of the year [Source: Screen Digest via Econsultancy Blog, April 2007]

News and Media

The share of UK internet visits to news and media sites were up 19% year-on-year in April 2007.  Print media sites are keeping pace, with visits up 17% year-on-year. [Source: Hitwise via Econsultancy blog, May 2007]

In Jan 2007, one in 24 UK internet visits went ot a news and media site. The BBC accounted for 15.45% of these visits. [Source: Hitwise via Econsultancy blog, May 2007]

Social Networks

UK adults spend more time on social networks than their European neighbours, with 4 in 10 UK adults saying that they regularly visit the sites. UK adults who visit the sited spend an average of 5.3 hours each month on them and return to them an average 23 times in the month. [Source: Ofcom, Dec 2007]

Social networks Facebook, Bebo and Myspace reached a combined 33.8 million unique UK users in March 2008, up from 30.8 million in March 2007. [Source: comScore NMA, Spril 2008].

Advertising

Total UK ad spend was down 0.7% to £8.9bn between Jan and June 2008.  However, online ad spend grew to £1.7bn in the first half of the year, a 21% increase from the same period in 2007. [Source: IAB/PwC, Oct 2008]

UK Social network ad spending totalled an estimated £115 million in 2008, a rise of 77%. [Source: eMarketer, Jan 2009].

The amount of UK web traffic retailers receive from social networks increased by 153% in the first nine months of 2007. [Source: Hitwise, Oct 2007].
